Hair Transplant Procedures: FUT vs. FUE

One of the major differences between hair transplant surgery and other forms of treatment for hair loss, is that the results of hair transplant surgery, under ideal conditions, is permanent. With medications, the result of the regrowth of hair not only stops when the medication is stopped, but the hair that is regrown has a tendency to fall out, and there are a number of things that can complicate that. Another benefit of transplant surgery is that the money is payed in one lump sum as opposed to being paid over the course of your lifetime. There are, however, different options for transplant surgery, and those generally have some pros and cons. It’s important to note, that no surgery is 100% successful, and any method is going to have some risks associated with it.

#1. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

FUT treatment involves the removal of a strip of skin from which the individual follicles are harvested for transplantation. One of the major benefits of this procedure is that the follicles harvested are generally of better quality and are less likely to be damaged beyond the point of being useful for transplantation. On the other hand, the procedure is typically going to be more painful. While the area is numbed with a local anaesthetic, the postoperative pain is going to be higher than the FUE procedure.

#2. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

FUE treatment involves the individual extraction of individual hair follicles in a random fashion. This leaves the donor area with less hair density, but it is generally not enough to be noticeable. The drawback to this procedure is the time it takes to harvest enough follicles to cover a larger area. However, with the use of modern technology, the process of identifying, and removing follicles can be made much simpler. Whereas FUT was traditionally the preferred treatment in cases where a large area had to be covered, FUE is increasingly becoming the preferred treatment in either case. This is because FUT leaves no scarring, and is far less painful. With the aid of robotic guiding systems, individual follicles can be extracted much more quickly.

“FUE used without the aid of robotic technology is simply not as effective as robotic hair transplant surgery,” says one Palo Alto doctor who performs transplant procedures. “We used to have to go in there and pluck each follicle manually. It was time consuming for both the patient and the doctor. The robotic system streamlines this process and also increases the chances of a successful transplant.”
