What to Avoid Following a Hair Transplant surgery

David Berman - Friday, November 09, 2018

Following hair transplant surgery there are a number of activities that patients should avoid. From swimming pools, to direct sunlight, exercise, and hair products, certain factors can impact the recovery. These factors should be avoided by patients following the surgery as they can prolong the recovery period and place the individual at an increased risk of infection, disease and pain. To prevent this from happening to you following hair loss surgery, continue on to the article below. This article explains all of the things that patients should avoid following a surgery.

Avoid Swimming Pools

It is important for patients who have just undergone a transplant procedure to avoid swimming pools, saunas and steam rooms. These activities should be avoided for at least one month following the procedure to helped minimize the risks associated with participating in these activities. These activities should be avoided due to the fact that the water can harm the scalp because of the chlorine in It. When patients are exposed to this chemical following surgery it can cause complications. This can prevent the patient from being able to recover quickly as they will likely suffer from additional pain and infections, ultimately, causing a great deal of discomfort to the individual which is why swimming should be avoided following the surgery.

Stay Out of Direct Sunlight

For patients who are in the recovery stage of the procedure it is recommended that they stay out of direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can prove harmful to the recover by preventing the scalp from being able to undergo the healing process. Direct sunlight can also inhibit the scalp from being able to heal as it may cause sunburn to the treated area. To prevent this from happening to your scalp it is recommended that recovering patients try to avoid direct sunlight as much as possible. This can be accomplished by sitting under an umbrella and ensuring that the scalp is covered while walking outdoors in the first three months after the procedure.

Avoid Physical Activity

Another activity that recovering patients should avoid is exercise. Exercise and physical activity should be avoided as much as possible in the first few weeks following the procedure. This is due to the fact that exercise will can result in painful injuries during this time period. This can occur given the heightened blood pressure that happens while exercising. This increase in pressure can cause the transplant or incision to bleed and be at risk of infection. Further, exercising can also cause the patient to experience a strained neck which can lead to scarring or surgical complications. Given these consequences, it is recommended that patients avoid strenuous activities until they are fully recovered.
