How It Works

Initial Consultation
Every consultation starts with a conversation. We get to know you and your goals for treatment, then outline a personalized plan to get you there. During these initial moments, we’ll also take a few photographs of your head, which we feed into our private ARTAS Hair Studio (AHS) technology. This allows us to create a digital model of your potential results and fine-tune your options:
- MTF hair transplants: If you want a more feminine appearance, we create a plan to round out your hairline and move it further forward to the front of the skull.
- FTM hair transplants: For an enhanced masculine appearance, we make the hairline more angular. Depending on your preferences, we can also discuss beard transplants, sideburns and other facial hair considerations.
Donor Area Analysis
Once we decide on the results you want to pursue, we can evaluate the best place to pull hair follicles from. Our software gives us an up-close view of every follicular unit (FU) — groups of one to three hairs — so we can choose the options that give you the greatest chance of success.
Traditionally, the FUs for a transplant come from the sides and back of the scalp, as they tend to have thicker hair that is less prone to thinning and balding. Berman Skin Institute also offers expanded donor areas, allowing us to pull grafts from areas like the chest or back without affecting the surrounding healthy follicles.
Follicle Extraction and Implantation
On the day of your appointment, we will apply a lidocaine numbing agent before beginning the extraction. As the robot delivers stereoscopic video images, we target FUs and harvest them — no linear scar left behind. Then, the device creates sites for each graft to be placed, reducing the chance of “shock loss” as we manually place individual FUs.
Recovery and Results
As you recover, you should begin to see results within a couple of months. However, depending on the growth rate of your hair, it may take up to a year for you to see the full effect of your results.
