All About Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness, also known as pattern hair loss, is something that affects millions of men as they age. And it’s also the number one cause of hair loss in men. There are some estimates that over 50 percent of men will experience some form of hair loss by the time they are 50.

Causes of Male Pattern Baldness

There are a few reasons you might be subject to male pattern baldness. Genetics is one reason. If your dad and your grandfather have balding, you’re highly likely to get it too. Part of what causes baldness is a decrease in sex hormones as you age. These sex hormones, called androgens, do a lot of different things, but one of the things they do is control hair growth.

Eventually hair follicles start to shrink and hair becomes thinner over time. At some point, hair will no longer grow in to replace the one before, leading to baldness.

Other Causes of Hair Loss

Besides genetics, there are other causes of hair loss that may need to be addressed by a doctor. Some cancers may cause hair loss, as well as certain medications or thyroid problems. Make an appointment with a doctor if your hair loss is sudden. The doctor can also look at the pattern of your hair loss to determine if it is indeed male pattern baldness.

When hair loss is accompanied by other symptoms, like fatigue or a rash, something else might be at work besides standard male pattern baldness.

Preventing Hair Loss

Unfortunately, when genetics are at play, there isn’t much that can be done. However, there are some studies that there is a connection between stress and sex hormones–stress can cause an increase in sex hormones. There are ways to reduce stress, such as exercises like yoga, listening to music, and generally engaging in more relaxing things like walking.

Treatments for Hair Loss

If you don’t want to let nature take its course, there are some ways that you can try to address the issue.

Haircuts – If your hair loss isn’t significant yet, then you may want to talk to your barber about creative methods for making your hair look fuller.

Hairpieces – There are many options for wigs and hairpieces, but if you don’t choose the right one, you run the risk of it looking unnatural or obvious.

Hair transplants – Hair transplants involve moving healthy hair from one area of the scalp to another.

If you’re one of the many men who deal with male pattern baldness and you live in the Palo Alto area, there are robotic hair transplant procedures available to you. Do your research and find a clinic that can offer you the best hair transplant services.
