Does Snake Oil Work for Hair Loss?
According to studies published by the University of Turkey, actual snake oil may be effective at treating hair loss. How does it work? According to the study, cellulose from the snake is extracted, distilled, and simply applied to the scalp. The study indicates that this resulted in increased hair growth in nearly 90% of men who suffer from hair loss.
The following story, although completely fake, could very well be the sales pitch for half a dozen “natural remedies” out there that purport to help men achieve mystic regrowth of hair. The problem of course is that these remedies don’t work at all, and when they do, the likely cause is simply poor hair care hygiene in the first place.
Unfortunately, poor hair care hygiene is fixed simply with good hair care hygiene. It does require the use of any extraneously “natural” remedy in order to catalyze the process. That being said, one of the major causes for the thinning of the hair as we age is the over-treatment of our hair with chemical conditioners, bleach, hair dyes, harsh soaps, hair dryers, curling irons, and half a dozen other products that are supposedly for the purpose of enhancing the aesthetics of our head.
“The best way to naturally prevent hair loss is through a balanced diet that promotes hair growth,” says one Palo Alto doctor. “Obviously this is the most natural remedy of them all, but eating properly isn’t a product that you can market, a quick fix, or something you can buy off a shelf. But if you feel like your hair is starting to thin, you need to make sure you’re getting the proper amount and kinds of protein in your diet. Five servings of dairy or beans or two or three 3 ounce servings of meat are all a good source of protein. Fish as well. Nuts, seeds, eggs, and fish are all good sources of omega-3 fatty acids which will promote healthy hair growth.”
“Sometimes people with an iron deficiency will notice hair loss or a thinning of their hair,” he continued. “None of this is going to be effective against male pattern baldness, however, which is an inherited disorder. For that there are medications that can be taken, or there are simple outpatient surgeries that can be performed to restore hair growth. But for the majority of Americans, the major problem is poor diet, and poor treatment of the hair.”
